What to Expect During an Eye Exam:
Regularly scheduled eye and vision examinations are an important part of keeping your eyes healthy. During a routine, comprehensive eye exam, you may expect:
- A visual acuity test to evaluate how clearly each eye is seeing.
- Evaluation of specific visual functions such as depth perception, color vision, eye muscle movement, peripheral or side vision, and how your pupils respond to light.
- Measurement of the curvature of your cornea. This is especially important when fitting contact lenses.
- Refraction to determine the lens power you need to compensate for nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism.
- A test of how well the eyes focus, move and work together
- External examination of the eyes
- Measurements of eye pressure, which may be an indicator of glaucoma
- Biomicroscope exam of the internal eye
- Dilated exam to assess the health of the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels in the back of the eye.
